Bowl - Cut Glass

Maker: European
Material: Cranberry colored flashed glass
Size: D. 5.25”
Date: ca. 1865
2014.05.26 The Mr. & Mrs. Franck H. Kaiser, Sr. Collection

This light cranberry colored bowl is from a larger set of glassware that would have included stemware and decanters. This particular piece appears to be a berry bowl or a sauce dish. Often berry bowls were part of a set that included a larger bowl from which to serve. Adelicia’s great-grandson remembers this set from growing up in Adelicia’s daughter’s house in Washington D. C.. He notes that these pieces were part of a larger set of glassware that included service for twenty-four. [Kaiser]

The architecture of Belmont Mansion makes it one of the most significant homes of 19th century Tennessee.

Sold by the Acklen family in 1887, the house went to a developer who began one of Nashville’s early suburbs.

It was then purchased by two women who in 1890 started a college which evolved into Belmont University. Today the Belmont Mansion Association, which was formed in 1972, owns the collection, runs the museum, and shares this unique story of 19th century Nashville with visitors from far and near.
