Mollie Buford

About 1849 - 1890
Housekeeper
Occupation:
Relations:
Frank Burford (son); Husband’s name unknown (predeceased her);
Parents both born in Tennessee, names unknown
About:
1880 – Listed in the US Census as the Cheatham’s housekeeper, living at Belmont with her one-year old son, Frank Burford. Oddly the Census lists her son as the cook, a notation that was likely meant either for his mother Mollie or for Agnes Sittell (Black), who appeared on the census line immediately under Frank, also living and working at Belmont.

1890 – May 7 – Mollie died at the age of 40 of heart disease [Daily American, May 11, 1890, Death Certificate # 279]. At the time, she lived at 323 Russel Street in Edgefield and was a widow. She was buried at Pest House, also known as Rest Home Cemetery.

The architecture of Belmont Mansion makes it one of the most significant homes of 19th century Tennessee.

Sold by the Acklen family in 1887, the house went to a developer who began one of Nashville’s early suburbs.

It was then purchased by two women who in 1890 started a college which evolved into Belmont University. Today the Belmont Mansion Association, which was formed in 1972, owns the collection, runs the museum, and shares this unique story of 19th century Nashville with visitors from far and near.
