SUMMARY:June 2nd--Mancil Ezell's Art Tour.
DESCRIPTION: We are excited to add a new monthly tour to our 2011 calendar! Many of you have probably heard the name Mancil Ezell in relation to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. His tours have attracted visitors from all over Nashville and the world! Executive Director Mark Brown and Mancil have cooked up a special art tour which will highlight many of the extraordinary pieces in the collection. Communicating an educational message in a fun and informative way takes quite a gift\, and if you have never heard Mr. Ezell’s tour you will be in for a treat. Mancil has had over 38 years of experience of teaching\, training and writing for higher education instructors. “My academic forte was adult learning styles—how you and I learn and how you translate a learning strategy so that everyone comes to the trough at least once in a class period\," he said. Mancil was in the “first class” of docents at the Frist Center and his enthuaism is evident in both his love of art and people. He has been there over ten years! A lot of prep work goes into researching\, weaving and learning a tour—at least one hour a day. Mancil says his childhood chores on an Alabama farm are to blame for his structured way of learning. “I’m highly regulated and disciplined—my family says ‘boringly so\,’” he said. But you won't find this tour dull! We guarantee it will be lively yet informative…and what a way to see yet another fascinating aspect of Belmont Mansion! The art tour will be held May 5th at 2 p.m. and will run every first and third Thursday of the month. Ticket price is $10 for non-members and $5 for members. For more information please visit our website www.belmontmansion.com or call 615-460-5459.

SUMMARY:Art Tour with Mancil Ezell
DESCRIPTION:This is the mansion tour NOT TO MISS! Many tourists and Nashville locals have had the opportunity to listen to Mancil discuss art at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts\, where he has gained quite a following during his ten years as a docent. Of course\, we want you to learn the history of this amazing place and it's former owner\, Adelicia Acklen\, and by taking this tour you will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of her vast artistic tastes. Adelicia was quite an unusual lady and her unique tastes are quite apparent once you first step in front of the mansion. (This is not just an ordinary residence!) Each tour is personal and intimate. SUMMARY:"Belmont Garden Talks"
DESCRIPTION: [caption id="attachment_1715" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Interior of Adelicia's Greenhouse. "][/caption] Belmont Mansion is pleased to announce its returning summer tour: “Belmont Garden Talks” to be held every Saturday at 9:00 AM starting June 4th. This outdoor tour lasts approx 45 minutes and takes visitors through the lavish gardens of Belmont Mansion. This docent-led tour will reconstruct the complex gardens and outdoor buildings that once comprised this estate. Other topics of discussion include Victorian garden design\, historical plants\, garden statuary and ornamental cast iron\, and a tour of the current grounds. Did you know the Victorian period was the golden era of plant exploration marked by an astounding introduction of new plant material to England and the Western world? There was an intense desire for discovery and exploration\, and the Victorian plant hunters were true adventurers who literally risked their lives in the pursuit of new plants. Many of the plants in our gardens today and the landscape designs that we follow originated during the Victorian era. So if you are a novice or an expert—you will find a topic of interest with this tour! Tickets are $5 per person for “Belmont Garden Talks.” You may also select a “two-for-one” tour of the mansion and gardens for $10 per person. (Adult tours of the mansion alone are $10.) Reservations for “Belmont Garden Talks” are required. Please call 615-460-5459 or email kate.wilson@belmont.edu to reserve your spot. *Garden tours are contingent upon weather. We all know wet grass does not make for a pleasant tour. If you have any questions about our weather policy please feel free to call.

SUMMARY:Children’s Author J Monkeys Comes to Belmont Mansion for Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Belmont Mansion welcomes children’s author J Monkeys for a book signing of her debut young adult novel\, “The Cordovan Vault\,” Tues.\, May 17. Starting at 4 p.m.\, J Monkeys will be signing copies of “The Cordovan Vault\,” published in March. During the signing\, she will read from “The Cordovan Vault” and speak about her writing process for her debut novel. J Monkeys will also speak about her upcoming short story\, “Dixie and Taco Go to Grandmother’s House\,” a book designed to help teach kindergartners how to read. Book 1 of “The Livingston-Wexford Adventures\,” “The Cordovan Vault” follows the story of Kayla and Quinn\, 14-year-old enemies\, who discover a family legacy of murder and betrayal at the hands of a shadowy secret society after the disappearance of their guardians\, Jim and Lorelei. Kayla and Quinn’s quest to find Jim and Lorelei leads them from rural Maine to Philadelphia where they solve a crime spree that has police baffled and help an old man make his dead wife’s final wishes come true. During their adventure\, Quinn and Kayla discover they have Advantages\, special abilities they don’t understand and can’t control. These Advantages mark them as members of yet another secret society\, one that has been hidden among mankind through the ages. A 200-year-old letter is mysteriously addressed to them confirms these two ancient and secret societies have been fighting a battle for millennia. It is all about to come to a head\, with Kayla and Quinn right in the middle. Against their wishes\, these two foes must work together to save their own lives\, and maybe a whole lot more. The book signing will take place in Belmont Mansion’s grand salon from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Tues.\, May 17. Hard copies of “The Cordovan Vault” will be available for purchase at $10. Refreshments will also be available. About J Monkeys J Monkeys has always been a storyteller\, although mostly just for self-entertainment. J Monkeys was shocked to learn that everybody didn’t spend their time with their head in a cloud imagining what they would do if some kind of adventure presented itself. After getting a degree in creative writing from the University of Connecticut and spending way too long writing boring things for a regular paycheck\, J Monkeys is proud to finally be a published author. J Monkeys lives in Connecticut with a menagerie of children and pets and is hard at work on the next book in “The Livingston-Wexford Series\,” “The Peacock Tale.” It’s a pirate-y adventure! Look for it in the fall of 2011.

SUMMARY:Superstar Docent Comes to Belmont for Special Art Tour
“My academic forte was adult learning styles—how you and I learn and how you translate a learning strategy so that everyone comes to the trough at least once in a class period.” Mancil was in the “first class” of docents at the Frist Center and his enthuaism is evident in both his love of art and people. He has been there over ten years! A lot of prep work goes into researching\, weaving and learning a tour—at least one hour a day. Mancil says his childhood chores on an Alabama farm are to blame for his structured way of learning. “I’m highly regulated and disciplined—my family says ‘boringly so’” but you will not find this tour dull! We guarantee it will be lively yet informative…and what a way to see yet another fascinating aspect of Belmont Mansion! The art tour will start April 7th at 2:00 PM and will run every first and third Thursday. Ticket price is $10 per person and $5 for members. For more information please visit our website www.belmontmansion.com or call 615-460-5459.

SUMMARY:Local Garden Guru comes to Belmont Mansion
DESCRIPTION: Local gardening guru host book signing at Belmont Mansion on April 3rd Save Time\, Save Effort\, Save Plants: New book provides cut-to-the chase Garden Tenets for the modern\, out-of-time homeowner. (Nashville\, TN) Belmont Mansion is excited to participate in the release of Garden Rules: The Snappy Synopsis for the Modern Gardener written by Billie Brownell and Jayme Jenkins. Billie Brownell will sign books from 1 to 3 PM. She will talk about gardening at 1:30. Admission is free. Jayme Jenkins\, founder of aHa! Modern Living and host of the popular home & garden Podcast Nest In Style\, and Billie Brownell\, long time best-selling garden book editor\, know that the world of gardening is chock-full of misinformation\, fine print\, advice and tips that can reduce a newbie gardener to sweaty disbelief and fluent cursing. As authors of the new book Garden Rules: The Snappy Synopsis for the Modern Gardener (Cool Springs Press\, February 2011)\, they know that most just want the set of garden laws\, 101 garden basics\, and a little guidance to avoid losing an entire patio of potted plants\, a full hedge\, or a whole lawn to weeds. Garden Rules is a compendium of the basic rules that every gardener who has ever grown a 15-foot “Dwarf” or tried to grasp the details of a USDA Hardiness Zone map\, will value. Brownell believes there are stops between inspiration and full-out landscape design—like buying perfect gloves\, avoiding Big Box bargain bins\, and knowing when to put up the hose. “The expectation for a beautiful garden and a perfectly manicured lawn can seem a bit overwhelming at times\,” says Brownell. “But there is a timeless set of gardening rules that can truly demystify the entire experience.” Garden Rules is the Brownell and Jenkins answer to the wide range of mistakes that an unwitting freshman gardener may make—perennial after dead perennial. It is the ultimate beginner’s guide to the basics – given a modern treatment. About the Authors Billie Brownell spent many years in the corporate world of marketing\, advertising\, and publishing from Scripps‑Howard to PC World magazine to the largest ad agency in the Southeast to Cool Springs Press. She now balances (or\, tries to balance) being an editor\, writer\, aspiring author of children’s books\, and a gardener with her passion of riding horses. She knows how to cut to the chase in order to fit it all in\, although this partly includes arising at 5 a.m. In addition to taking care of her horse Keillor (named for Garrison Keillor)\, Billie volunteers at a therapeutic riding facility and serves as the self‑nominated social cruise director for all who will allow it. You can find Billie on Facebook\, Twitter\, and via her blog at Cool Springs Press. Jayme Jenkins\, a former corporate sales rep\, is now a full‑time online entrepreneur with a virtual store specializing in modern home and garden décor. Jayme maintains contact by hosting two blogs\, two Twitter accounts\, two Facebook Fan Pages\, and a garden‑lifestyle podcast. She knows firsthand the challenges of balancing a professional career and a busy lifestyle. Online Store: aHa! Modern Living Blogs: aHa! SUMMARY:2nd Annual Decorative Arts Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Belmont Mansion Announces 2nd Annual Tennessee Decorative Arts Symposium: The People’s Present from the Past Tennesseans have played important roles in shaping the character of our nation. Learn more about their contributions to the decorative arts and culture with the Belmont Mansion this spring. Nashville\, January 25\, 2011 – Belmont Mansion hosts its 2nd annual Tennessee Decorative Arts Symposium Saturday\, April 9\, with sponsors Case Antiques Inc.\, Auctions & Appraisals; Becky Puckett Antiques and Estate Sales; Belmont University and Belmont Mansion’s board of directors. Join scholars\, collectors and historians as they examine and interpret the material culture and decorative arts of the South and Tennessee through history. “Our theme for this year’s symposium focuses on the legacy left by our forebears to help us better understand our Tennessee heritage\,” said Ashley McAnulty\, Belmont Mansion board member. “The objects have so much more meaning when we understand who made them\, for what purpose they were made and how they have survived to the present day. Many of the early items used by Tennesseans were made for functional use by local craftsman and later evolved into “fancy” works of art\, furniture and architecture. “This year’s symposium is shaping up to be a real exciting and educational event. The symposium offers individuals interested in Tennessee decorative arts and architecture a chance to see and hear about many of the objects in private and public collections\,” said Mark Brown\, Belmont Mansion's executive director. The symposium\, titled this year “The People's Present from the Past\,” will feature guest speakers highlighting specific examples and recent discoveries addressing the stylistic changes in the decorative arts of Tennessee and their origins. It will also address the ever-growing interest in the decorative arts of Tennessee and encourage the sharing of ideas and information. Speakers this year include\, with their subject title: Steve Brown\, Early Tennessee Migration; Michael Gavin\, Early Tennessee Interiors; Robert Hicks\, Tennessee Maps; Suzanne McDowell\, Regional Textiles; Tracey Parks\, Tennessee Furniture; and Samuel Smith and Steve Rogers\, Tennessee Pottery: 1790s to 1950. “The market for Tennessee regional art and antiques is very strong right now\, and the more people research and understand these objects\, the more we expect that trend to continue\,” said Sarah Campbell Drury\, vice president of Case Antiques\, one of this year's sponsors. “The lineup of speakers is excellent\, and we are thrilled to support this symposium for the second year in a row.” A VIP pre-symposium reception will be held at the home of one of the area’s recognized Tennessee collectors Friday\, April 8. Registration is $125 and includes the pre-symposium reception\, symposium and lunch the day of the event. Registration for the symposium and lunch is $100. Seating is limited to 100 persons and advance registration by mail\, fax or online is required. For planning purposes\, there will be no refunds for cancellations after March 31.
